The plans for it were announced more than a year ago, and the staff here eagerly looked forward to making the move out of these 130-year-old digs into something new that would fit our ever-expanding needs. We WILL be seeing a new press facility within the next few months - and, thank goodness, a new press to go with it - but otherwise, our immediate future belongs here in this former German gymnasium that was once called Turner Hall, which has been this newspaper’s home for more than 100 years. The most recent of them - and one of the best of them, given the months of drama that preceded it - was the day six weeks ago when Publisher Gary Wood announced he was purchasing the newspaper. The warm sense of groundedness I felt as those trick-or-treaters filled what passes for a lobby here, deep in the heart of this historic downtown where we’ve resided for so long, seemed more important just then than it had in many, many Halloweens. Julie Myers, then-acting chief of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and two subordinates were cited in the report by Democrats on the House Homeland Security Committee for exercising "poor judgment" by giving an award at the party to an employee wearing prison stripes, a dreadlocks wig and face-darkening make-up. It was only in early February, six weeks after Myers was confirmed by the Senate as the official head of ICE, that the agency released the restored photos in response to a CNN Freedom of Information request. She said after the Department of Homeland Security started an internal investigation into the incident, Myers "removed herself completely" from any day-to-day involvement in the case and was told the photos were recovered "probably a couple of days" before they were released. When the employee showed up at the afternoon party, "several employees were shocked and offended by the costume; some even left immediately after seeing the disguise," the report says. Myers has said that immediately after posing for photos with the employee, she reconsidered the propriety of the award and ordered the photos destroyed, sending a letter of apology to employees. SANTA ANAA Huntington Beach man who claimed he had delusions that his landlady put a witchcraft spell on him was sentenced to 26 years to life today for the stabbing death of his roommate on Halloween 2005. Vladimir Benitez, 28, was convicted of first-degree murder and found legally sane last month for killing Camilo Martinez-Santiago, 32, in the living room of a boarding house where both men were staying. Senior Deputy District Attorney Sonia Balleste, however, argued that Benitez planned and premeditated the slaying after he learned he was about to be evicted from the boarding house. Balleste said Benitez left the Huntington Beach house for several days, but returned on Halloween 2005, grabbed a knife from the kitchen and stabbed Martinez-Santiago as he slept. But this afternoon authorities announced that Orlando Avila, 18, was yanked out of bed by police at his home in the 4500 block of South Wolcott Avenue this week and charged with one count of first-degree murder and two counts of attempted first-degree murder. Her husband, Manuel Flores(bottom center) answered questions following the announcement of the arrest during a press conference with Police Chief Jody Weis (left) and Ald. The pieces included tracking down witnesses as well as the intended targets of the shooting captured on a blue-light camera and then sending officers out to talk with both gang members and community members to identify the shooter.
