How To Choose A Fun & Creative Children’s Halloween Costumes

Saturday, September 20th, 2008
by Phil Sikes

Picking a Halloween costume isn’t that hard. You’ll have lots of help. Trust me, lots, and lots of help. Kids can’t wait to tell you what they, “simply have to be” for Halloween this year. They are bound and determined for you to use their idea, probably just as much as you are not to let this get out of hand.

If you explain you ground rules to your children before Halloween time rolls around, you will be better able to reach a decision about the costume that all parties involved will be satisfied with.

Before you even start to look at costumes, you need to establish a hard and fast budget for costume spending. This is because, even though it might be the perfect costume, spending an exorbitant amount of money on an outfit that is only going to be worn a few short days at most does not make a lot of financial sense. After you decide how much you are willing to spend, offer your children lots of options, bearing in mind that you might have to steer them clear of costumes that are not appropriate for their age. Try to make the entire costume selection process as fun as possible.

There are also safety concerns to be considered depending on how old your children are. Think about whether or not a costume could cause a child to trip and fall while walking or perhaps even suffocate them. Consider the weight of the costume and whether or not it will be too hot to wear. Especially with girls, it is important to think about whether or not your child will be too exposed in their costume. This often occurs because costume manufacturers aim their designs at adult audiences. Think seriously about how your daughter will look. While you and your child might be fine with some, others might make you uncomfortable.

You might decide to shop online this year for your Halloween costumes, and if you do, you’ve probably made a wise decision. The choice online is many times greater, and by starting your shopping now you’ll be able to have the pick of the best available costumes this year. Many online sites have not only great selections, but fast shipping, low prices and incredibly creative ideas, available in all sizes.

Some of the most creative designs will be found online as opposed to the department stores and seasonal Halloween shops that spring up this time of year. Those stores have to market the latest, most popular costumes, as they can’t afford to take a flyer on a costume that may or may not sell. Online, that’s not the case.

While looking around a local department store you might find little more than costumes of princesses, pirates, and wizards, online shopping yields a host of costumes for kids. Some easy to find examples include a shark, a gumball machine, a cell phone, the Statue of Liberty, characters from The Wizard of Oz, and colonial outfits. By spending a little bit of time on your costume search, you can find a fun and unique costume.

Take your time, shop early and make this Halloween an event your child will remember!

Teenage Halloween Costume Ideas: How to Choose

Thursday, September 18th, 2008
by Phil Sikes

If you’ve been tasked to try and find the perfect teenage Halloween costume for either yourself or your teen, then know first that this is not an impossible task. You can find exactly what you’re after with a combination of searching online or maybe a little store shopping. With some added creativity on your part, before you know it, the perfect costume will be yours!

First you need to decide on a theme, in other words, what general category you would like to dress as this year. This just helps keep you from looking at everything that’s out there and help to focus the search a little.

The next decision you need to make is whether you would prefer to purchase the costume in a local costume shop or by means of an Internet store. Buying a Halloween costume on the Internet has its advantages, such as having access to more costumes, buying from a retailer with a larger stock of costumes, and being able to find what is typically the best price. You can find a plethora of online costume shops by doing a Google search for “teenage Halloween costumes.”

After doing such a search, you should stick to the results on the first few pages. You can refine your search, however, if you would like a very specific costume. For example, searching for “teenage Marie Antoinette Halloween costume” might help you find that special, hard to find costume that you are hunting for. Try out some similar searches and see if you can’t find something interesting.

Modern themed costumes include movie, sports, and music stars. Basically anyone that has received recent public attention in the media is a good candidate for a teenage Halloween costume. For instance, your teenager could dress as the Barack Obama girl, Michael Vick’s dog trainer, Al Gore’s son, Paris Hilton dressed as a convict, and Lindsay Lohan’s drug rehab counselor.

The news is rife with ideas like these and some not quite so much capitalizing on their misfortunes. Try and make your costumes as clever as you can, incorporating as much detail and imagination as you can into them. Don’t settle for the store bought costume and leave it at that. Make sure to go the extra mile and do the makeup, appropriate props, and anything else that will help get your point across.

Take the idea about Lindsay Lohan’s drug rehab counselor, for example. Accessories for this costume could include a police mug shot of Lindsay. You might design a fake dead dog for Michael Vick’s dog trainer to drag around on a leash. These types of clever and unique accessories turn a normal costume into a big conversation piece.

Remember to try on your costume before the night of Halloween. You want to be able to make any adjustments necessary before the last minute. Use these suggestions to make your teenage Halloween costume truly memorable.

Adult Halloween Costumes: Fun for Kids of All Ages

by Phil Sikes

After you have worked so hard to make sure that your kids are happy with their costumes and prepared for all the Halloween fun that awaits them, why not take some time to make the holiday enjoyable for you too? Think about what kind of costume you can wear to enjoy the holiday more yourself this year.

Adult Halloween costumes can be found in nearly unlimited variety. Adult costumes are available in all shapes and sizes with all kinds of different themes. The only limit is your budget.

You can find a vast array of potential adult Halloween costume ideas by searching online at costume shops. By spending some time going through all the different possibilities, you will be able to find a Halloween costume that you and others will have fun with.

There are costumes for almost anything you might dream up. From Biblical characters to the latest superheroes, you simply need to decide what you want to do. If you are a couple planning on doing something together, there are many great ideas. In a few minutes searching online I saw plug and socket costumes, Mustard and Ketchup, Dog the Bounty Hunter and Beth, Lock and Key couples, Ball and Chain and many more, just from one vendor. You also might get very creative and dress up as more contemporary figures right out if the news. Lindsay Lohan and her rehab Counselor come to mind.

In women’s adult Halloween costumes, the choices and many and breathtaking. While most of them lean to the sexy side of things, there are exceptions if you don’t want to dress up like all the girls you just saw down on the corner. Some of the more interesting choices I saw while briefly browsing include an Elf, Hula Girl, Mermaid, Medusa, Ghostly Victorian lady, Wicked Witch from Oz, The Virgin Mary, Marilyn Monroe and many , many more!

Mens costumes are equally varied, some following movie themes, some just being outright wacky. Some examples include Darth Vader or any other Star Wars character, Tony Montana, the Incredible Hulk, Spiderman, a Viking, a monk, a gladiator, the grim reaper, an outhouse, and basically whatever other interesting costume concept you can dream up.

Remember that you are going to have to wear this costume while you have a good time at a Halloween party, so it should fit comfortably and not be overly hot to wear. Since a lot of popular Halloween costumes require quite a bit of makeup, it would be in your best interests to start dressing up well before you leave the house. Especially for the guys, getting some help with the makeup from someone else is a good idea.

Above all else, never lose sight of the fact that the whole point of wearing an adult Halloween costume is having fun. So, in the midst of the all you preparations, dont forget to have fun too!

Planning Fun & Creative Halloween Activities

Wednesday, September 17th, 2008
by Phil Sikes

Concerns about the celebration of Halloween festivities today in the modern world have led to some changes, though it remains a popular celebration. Halloween is especially popular in Ireland, where it gave rise to a public holiday, and in most parts of America. Also, Halloween has become another very important day in the commercial promotions calendar.

In England, the community bon fire tradition at Halloween mostly moved to the November 5th Guy Fawkes celebrations long ago, and has largely faded elsewhere in the face of environmental concerns. Similarly, the traditional community games and fun associated with Halloween have faded in most parts of the world.

Modern health concerns have almost completely eliminated older outdoor traditions like bobbing for apples and have replaced them with modern ones like watching horror films in the home. Since community activities that involved the use of fruit and other natural items are no longer celebrated, trick-or-treating now focuses on the search for candy and sweets on a personal level by local children.

A growing number of people show an overall dislike for the idea of trick-or-treating since it seems like a threatening form of begging to them. Children, however, have always loved the fun of collecting candy door to door in scary or funny costumes. Thus, many homeowners have turned trick-or-treating into a fun event for all parties involved by decorating their homes quite extensively and adding frightening details like creepy sound effects. Some people even dress up in costumes in an effort to scare the kids that visit the home to ask for treats.

The safety of children moving from door-to-door to collect sweets and gifts from strangers in large city communities worries many parents and authorities. In some communities there is supervision and even a move to set up controlled environments where the collection takes place. As a sign of the times, even health issues have been raised about the handling and safety of unwrapped sweets.

Charity fund raising involvement has cut back in the face of these concerns becoming more widespread, for example a long running UNICEF fund raising scheme centered on Halloween collections was cut back in 2006.

In some parts of the world the trick aspect to Halloween has unfortunately led to vandalism taking the place of minor mischief or witty pranks, and has given Halloween another less attractive image.

In some communities, Halloween has not been welcomed as a pop culture event because of the possible unpleasant results it can potentially produce.

Making a Personalized Pirate Costume for Halloween

Friday, September 5th, 2008
by Phil Sikes

Whether it is for you or one of your children, making a personalized pirate costume for Halloween does not have to be a long or difficult process at all. In fact, in can be quite enjoyable. The most important thing you will need is a good imagination. The majority of the actual materials you will need are probably lying around your home already, just waiting to be used. And whatever odds and ends you need that are not in the house will be easy to find and cheap to buy. Keep reading to find some great ideas about how to make a great outfit modeled after whichever famous pirate you choose, be it Jack Sparrow, Black Beard, or Long John Silver.

To start off with, you will need the two most basic pieces of any good pirate costume: a pair of old black pants and a bright colorful blouse that is flashy and attention getting. A gold or red blouse is usually your best bet. An interesting scarf will work well as a belt for your adventurous pirate. The black pants will eventually be cut off and fringed to match the character better.

The blouse that you will need can probably be found somewhere in your closet. Find an old one that is shiny. It should also be a little too big for the person who will be wearing the costume since they will need to be able to move around freely.

If your pirate is fortunate enough to be the captain of this heinous bunch of high seas bandits, then you’ll have to come up with a hat of some sort. Felt and cardboard can do wonders with a makeshift pirate’s hat, and if your pirate is simply a common cutthroat, then a flashy, (probably red) bandana will do just fine.

You can also fashion a hook for a hand with cardboard and some craft paints, and you can also come up with various weaponry this way. Be careful to make your broadswords non-lethal. Tin foil over stiff cardboard should do the trick nicely with a few added painted touches.

All of the best pirates were obsessed with gold and treasure, so yours should be too. That means that you should wear some big, gaudy, gold costume jewelry, which is easy to find at local thrift stores. An earring will also give your pirate costume an authentic feel.

Some other accessories that can truly liven up your pirate costume this Halloween are an eye patch and well applied face makeup. You might choose to give your pirate a black beard, a blacked out tooth, or a plastic bird attached to the shoulder.

Coming up with a fantastic pirate Halloween costume doesn’t have to be time-consuming or expensive. Scour your closets and you’ll find most of what you need, with the rest available for only a few dollars.

Halloween Candy Safety Tips for You and Your Kids!

Friday, September 5th, 2008
by Phil Sikes

There are always new and more disturbing stories of poisoned or otherwise tainted Halloween candy that come to the public’s attention each year. For that reason, parents are often very concerned about keeping their kids safe during Halloween celebrations.

Not all children are doomed to have a bad Halloween candy experience. Parents can do quite a bit to ensure that their children enjoy all the fun of Halloween without any of the unpleasant possibilities. Both parents and their children need to follow some important safety steps in order to have a fun and safe time this year.

* Do not eat any treats that are wrapped loosely. If the wrapper is loose than it is very possible that the candy has also had something done to it. Candy that is wrapped tightly is usually a safe bet.

* Give your child a hearty meal BEFORE they go out trick or treating. They won’t be as hungry and less likely to gorge themselves on everything they collect along the way.

* Do not let your children decide to eat what candy they want. Instead, decide for yourself which candy you will permit your children to eat. It is not easy to prevent your kids from eating candy they want without you being aware of it. You could establish a similar rule and let your kids eat all the candy they want from friends’ houses that you know you can trust.

* Examine any fruits or sweets that are homemade very carefully, since some disturbed individuals have been known to insert such goodies with needles, pins, and razorblades.

* Many people have lots of free address labels around the house with your name and home address on them. Attaching these to the candy you give out means you are taking responsibility for the candy. Doing this might encourage some of your other neighbors to do so also.

* Tell your kids to take a mental note of who gives them what candies. Even though they will not be able to remember every individual person they meet on Halloween night, reminding them to do so without intimidating them or scaring them could turn out to be very helpful.

* Above all else, one rule regarding Halloween candy must always be followed with absolutely no possible exceptions. When in doubt, throw it out! Doing this will eliminate almost all dangers when it comes to Halloween candy.

* It is always preferable for parents to go trick-or-treating along with their children. Also, try to take advantage of the late afternoon and early evening to do trick-or-treating instead of going late at night.

Hopefully these suggestions will be able to help you have a safe and fun Halloween with your children.

Halloween Harry Potter Party

Thursday, September 4th, 2008
by Phil Sikes

The wizardry and witchcraft that is at the heart of the Harry Potter stories makes an ideal theme for a Harry Potter Halloween party.

The last Harry Potter book in the series by J. K. Rowling is now released, but the movie series is still rolling out, and will keep the stories alive for years to come. For many children today, a Harry Potter book is the first full length book they will read.

Harry Potter also appeals to a broad range of ages. This is mostly because many older teenagers started reading with the first book and then eagerly anticipated each addition to the series.

Lost of decorations and costumes can be pulled straight out of the world of Harry Potter. For example, ghosts, goblins, witches, wizards, broomsticks, hats, skeletons, spiders, spider webs, magic potions all fit with Halloween and the Harry Potter theme. Other decorative touches that relate directly to Harry Potter include character costumes, Hogwart’s items like crests, posters, owls, frogs, etc.

As Harry Potter has become increasingly popular at Halloween time, more and more Harry Potter related products and decorations are available in stores each year.

Harry Potter Halloween parties can be announced with Harry Potter themed invitations. These can include fonts and images found online that are related to the world of Harry Potter. Make sure that you invitations inform guests of the date, time, and location of the party. In order to make the catering process easier, ask invited guests to RSVP. Don’t forget that the parents of your guests need to be informed of safety measurements being taken and transportation arrangements that have been made.

Keep the Harry Potter theme running through the party activities by watching the Harry Potter movies, reading the books, discussing details of the story and films, doing Harry Potter related crafts, playing Harry Potter video games, and looking at fan sites online.

Crafts don’t have to be complicated. You can get everyone to make a Harry Potter style wand for themselves with nothing more than a wooden dowel and some paints.

Halloween Costumes for Toddlers

Thursday, September 4th, 2008
by Phil Sikes

Not all Halloween festivities can be participated in by toddlers. That does not mean, however, that toddlers have to be completely uninvolved in the fun. They are sure to want to wear their own Halloween costume, even if they are not able to go trick-or-treating.

Remember that toddlers tend to be sensitive to a lot of the scary sights of Halloween. Although older kids love the thought of terrifying their neighbors with gruesome or spooky costumes, toddlers could be really frightened by seeing such things. That means that parents need to make sure that their toddlers are well cared for while participating in Halloween events.

Most toddlers have a favorite television cartoon, movie or story book character. Small children get a lot more pleasure from dressing up as a familiar character they know and love. They are still young enough to like to be praised for looking cute, and are more likely to get a lot of fun out of acting out the role of their favorite character than out of trying to be an evil witch or goblin.

There are some characters that seem to be rather timeless favorites of many toddlers. For example, Mickey Mouse, Scooby Doo, Superman, Spiderman, and Batman will always be popular with young kids. Your toddler, though, might have a different character in mind, depending on what happens to be popular at the moment.

Even if the costume itself is not of the highest quality, your toddler will love it if it allows them to become one of their favorite characters. That means that, in order to choose correctly, you need to pay attention to which characters really fascinate your children when you read them stories or when they watch television and movies.

Toddler costumes of popular characters are not difficult to find at all, both for sale and rent. The price of the costume will depend on its quality. You can find cheap plastic costumes as well tremendously detailed ones that are less cheap. While trying to decide which costume is best for your toddler, you also need to think about which costumes will be safest. Stay away from outfits that are flammable, for example.

Since candles are a common part of most Halloween decorations, being cautious when choosing a costume is in your best interests. You don’t want to have to worry that your child might be in danger.

A problem with renting is that the costume must be returned. If your toddler falls in love with a well chosen costume you may find this could become a difficulty for you.

The Real Secret To Winning A Costume Contest at Halloween

Tuesday, September 2nd, 2008
by Phil Sikes

Okay, this year is your year! You’re determined to take home the prize for the most creative Halloween costume this year, and you don’t care who gets hurt in the process! (Sorry, seasonal humor!) Let’s ponder a few ideas to get your creative juices flowing for ways to make this year’s costume one for the ages!

My best strategy for winning a Halloween costume contest is to be overtly original. If you buy your costume off the rack either online or off, you’re pretty much doomed to failure. If they’ve seen it, they’ve seen it! Originality is everything here, and you can’t afford to be like the crowd if you want to win the contest!

One great way to make a creative costume is to play off of a recent news story involving a famous person. Costumes of this nature will work out even better if the news story has been embarrassing or misfortunate. Consider some examples of just how you can pull it off. You could choose to dress up as Paris Hilton, well accessorized and dressed in a prison outfit. Other options could be Lindsay Lohan desperately searching for a fix, the Obama girl, or Michael Vick dragging a dead dog behind him on a leash.

This type of costume can work out extremely well. Unfortunately, it can also completely fail if other people are not able to recognize you easily. If you do not naturally look anything like the celebrity that you are trying to dress as, you will need to invest a lot of effort into your make up and hair so you can make the costume believable.

Not only that, but you need to be sold out to the idea of portraying this person. That means acting like they would act, talking like they would talk, and in general becoming that person for the duration of the party. (Or at least until the judging is done!)

Make sure you fit into this costume concept. If you’re trying to portray Will Smith when your body more closely resembles Norbitt, then we’ve got a problem from the get-go! Also, if your costume has you exposed more than you might be normally, make sure you can live with this. If you’re going to dress up as Brittany Spears and are uncomfortable showing the amount of everything she shows, then rethink your costume! If you look the least bit uncomfortable either in concept or execution, people will notice.

If you are going as a couple, just be sure and not do what everyone else has done before. Originality wins, particularly in couples contests!

Make sure you have some fun! That’s the bottom line here in all of this. If you come up with a great costume but aren’t enjoying both the process and the contest, then what’s the point?

Children’s Halloween Costumes

Tuesday, September 2nd, 2008
by Phil Sikes

Homemade children’s Halloween costumes can be fun to make if your children help, but you have to consider the cost and time you put into it if the children are not participating and learning how to do it with you. Sometimes it can be more economical to save your time and buy a ready made costume at the prices now available in the shops.

One way to ensure you do not spend excessive time on making a costume from the raw material on up, is to start with old clothes from the family closet or a thrift shop. That way, most of your effort goes into the fun part your children enjoy being part of - making the accessories and getting made up for the part.

Think about one simple example of a child’s costume: a scarecrow. More than likely, you can find an old pair of slightly ripped jeans, an old shirt, and a big straw hat that can serve as the key parts of the outfit. Then, add pieces of straw to the cuffs of the pants and the shirt, as well as to the bottom of the hat.

The details could include a bird sitting on the scarecrow’s hat and some creative face painting. The idea is to create a unique and interesting look.

A basic pirate costume could be made from little more than an old shirt and cut down old jeans, with a bandana around the head. Your main effort would go into setting up the accessories such as a broad belt and sword, an eye patch, face painting and artificial tattoos.

A basic low cost outfit of stretch pants and a long sleeved turtle top is another way to get the starting foundation for a costume. A black outfit like this needs only a black cape and a witch’s hat and you have the beginnings of a witch’s costume.

Other colors could become animal costumes with the addition of a tail, ears, mittens and some face paint. Some costume shops have partial costumes such as faces, noses, tails and ears available to add these features to your basic costume.

For a tiger, for example, some black fabric paint on a yellow outfit could be used to create stripes. A little stuffing under a yellow outfit and you have the beginnings of a plump Winnie The Pooh.
