Theater Makeup for the Stage and Halloween Costume Fun

Friday, October 3rd, 2008
by Susan West

While dressing up for Halloween or as other characters such as a clown, theater or stage makeup works wonders. You can change into a sweet princess or a hideous ghoul or anything in between when using theater makeup. Whatever character you want to dress up as, it is even more possible with theater makeup.

Children and adults can dress up as anything they please, since Halloween is such a fun filled holiday. The use of stage makeup can transform a little girl into an enchanting fairy or a little boy into the most frightening vampire. Stage makeup is useful for many things such as creating wounds and scars while dressing as a goblin or zombie or it can create the look of fake blood on a witch or other supernatural characters. With stage makeup, the old can look young while the young can look old as well as making the loveliest of all look like an old hag. Theater makeup is wonderful for creating any Halloween look and it is fun to use for all ages.

Theater makeup is also great for school plays and other performances, since it can transform almost anybody into something completely different. Stage makeup can make a sweet little child look like a yellow daisy, red like an apple, or even like an adult. When children perform history plays in their classrooms, they can use stage makeup to add a beard, mustache, and even wrinkles to look older. Stage makeup can also make children look like fairly tale characters from their favorite movies and cartoons, so they can put on a play about a topic they love. Stage makeup is great for children to use for their school plays, since they can transform into almost anything.

Mimes and clowns make use of Halloween clown makeup to complete their appearance, which really offers the children some good laughs. Mime performers, while painting their entire face white and then adding various colors in different designs and shapes around the eyes and mouth often use clown makeup. Children are thoroughly entertained at birthday parties and other events by clowns and mimes in their colorful stage makeup.

There are times when theatre makeup is just not enough when you need to create a specific effect. The use of molds or pliable latex can be blended with stage makeup. If Pinocchio only had theatre makeup to create his long nose, we could either be waiting a long time, or an even longer time. In order to create the desired length, which is also seen by the audience, fake latex must be attached. However, a Pinocchio without a long nose is just as unconvincing as a Pinocchio with a peeling nose. After securely attaching the latex nose, simply blend the edges with matching theatrical makeup. Ta-da! Theatre Success!

If you have some Halloween makeup stashed away in your bathroom cabinet, bring it out for sports games and paint those crazy colors on your face to liven things up a bit. What better way to show your team spirit and cheer for who you really want to win than with sports makeup at the sporting event.

When using theater makeup, it is possible to transform any actor into a fantasy character. Theater makeup works great for children’s plays and performances, as well as Halloween costumes. Children entertainers such as clowns and mimes also frequently use stage makeup, which makes it possible to entertain kids in disguise. Theater makeup is a must have for holidays as well as school events, and all parents should have some on hand in case they need to transform their child into a princess or goblin. Adult Costumes for Halloween that Make You Look Good

Monday, July 7th, 2008
by Fred Tellier

Despite what many people believe, Halloween is not just for kids. Adults have just as much fun attend Halloween parties as children, and the costumes can be just as elaborate. Shopping for Halloween costumes can be very exciting, especially if you are attending the party with someone and want your Halloween costumes to be themed. Any businesses that cater to the public hold special Halloween parties where there are contests and prizes for the best costumes. When you are attending this type of party, it is important to have the perfect Halloween costume.

Although traditional Halloween costumes include witches and princesses, adult Halloween costumes are as varied as children. However, adult costumes include a completely different genre than children. Many adults choose costumes that have an adult theme that can surely win the contests that are held. A sexy costume will most likely beat a witches costume every time.

So, what are your options for clean adult Halloween costumes? Basically, your options are endless. Many costume shops now sell adult Halloween costumes. Of course, it is no longer cute for an adult to go as the little princesses they may have been when children. However, there are many creative costumes. Often very colorful shirts, shorts, and hats can be combined to make a costume. Old sheets, curtains, and games can be combined to make a costume. If not crafty at all, or not in the mood or out of time for making a costume, buying a costume is a good option.

Clean costumes that can be bought are almost endless. These clean costumes often take the ideas of being crafty and create costumes on a professional level. For example, a woman could easily take an old twister game and put the sheet on a dress or try to make some clothing out of it, putting the spinner board on a hat. Yet, that woman could also buy an adult Halloween costume that is a dress that is made with the Twister pattern and already has hat that is made with the spinner board on top. Other costumes that are not as traditional may be insects, other animals, and food.

Older standbys are both popular and easy to customize. There are witches and wizards at every Halloween party and this type of costume is easy to make. You have the choice of being scary or kindly. You can make the costume mainly or partly from your own clothes and add your own personal touches to make it yours. Pirate costumes are quite popular nowadays too. You can use different styles and colors when making a pirate costume. You might like to be a cheeky deckhand in black and white or a wooden-legged pirate with a bright stripy outfit. You might want to attach a toy bird to your shoulder for a fun touch! You can really let your imagination fly if you want to create an adult costume like this.

Choosing a Halloween costume is one thing that most people look forward to every year, not just children, but adults also. Creativity is the key to choosing any Halloween costume. Edited by Hetsil Protage

Looking through a Scary Halloween Mask at the World

Sunday, June 29th, 2008
by Susan West

For centuries people have donned masks for multiple reasons from masquerade balls to religious rituals to Halloween, or Samhain, parties. Across the world, in many different countries for many different reasons masks have become a way for people to transform into someone else for the day. In theater masks are used to change from one character to another. Masks can be almost magical and are appealing to many, especially on Halloween.

For some people, when they begin to determine what they would like to dress up as for Halloween, may start with their costume and then go about choosing just the right mask to accentuate their Halloween costume, while others will first choose their Halloween mask and then build their costume around it. Since everyone is different, neither of these choices is better than the other when it comes to choosing a Halloween mask and accessories. In other words, choose your Halloween costume and mask in the manner that best fits your needs.

Halloween masks add both excitement and mystery to your costume while being wonderful accessories. However, while choosing the perfect Halloween mask you should know that some of the most realistic looking ones are the latex masks. When choosing a latex mask you can be just about anything from an alien, animal or insects. You may also choose from a wide assortment of Halloween masks that include your favorite television shows, movies and cartoon characters.

Unless of course you would rather show up in a scary mask while trick or treating, door to door or simply enjoying time with friends and family while carving a Halloween pumpkin, there are so many to choose from. Such as Jason or Freddie masks as well as a large and wonderful assortment of goblins, ghouls, corpses and creepy clowns. Although, we should not forget the classics like Frankenstein, werewolves, zombies, ghosts as well as Presidents, goons, monsters and other masks of mayhem.

There are also witches, wizards, pirates and Mardi Gras masks. Old men and women masks are also popular as well as going to a haunted house wearing a Game Face sports ball mask. Although, you may also choose a Halloween mask that is not so frightful such as queens, kings, princess, angels, fairies, unicorns and dragons.

Whatever your taste, you’re sure to find a mask that fits you both in size and in preference. Of course, you don’t need to be a child to enjoy Halloween; if costumes aren’t your speed, simply wear your favorite outfit and don a mask to top it off at your next Halloween party.

If you’re not sure what your child might like, some of the most popular Halloween masks for children last year were the Disney Princess, Power Rangers, Ghost and Ghoul, Fairy, Gypsy, Superhero, Witch, Spider-Man, Superman, Princess, Pirates, Witch, Pumpkins, Vampires and Cats. Favorite masks for the adult group included Ghost and Ghoul, Fairy, Gypsy, Superhero, Clown, Cat, Vampire, and Pirate. Whatever you choose, you should have a lot to pick from. You should keep in mind, though, that the best choices are likely to be gone early, so make your choice as soon as you can. If you wait too long, your particular favorite might be gone. May the Force be with You: Adult and Child Star Wars Costume

Monday, June 2nd, 2008
by Susan West

May the Force be with You. Many individuals enjoy dressing up as Stars Wars characters since they first came onto the silver screen scene, such characters as, Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, Han Solo and Queen Amidala. On the other hand, perhaps Darth Vader or a storm trooper is more fitting to your Halloween costume needs. Child and adult Star Wars costumes are much the same, with the exception of their size in scale. This means that whether you are in search of a child Star Wars costume or an adults Star Wars costume you will be able to find the costume that best fits your needs. Everyone wants the force to be with them.

Adult Star Wars Costume Adult Star Wars costumes come in a vast array of choices, sometimes it can be difficult to choose just one. For instance, Chewbacca and the storm trooper costumes are a Halloween hit as well as many other interesting Star Wars characters. The awesome face makeup of Darth Maul is another popular adult Star Wars costume, especially with the men.

Child Star Wars Costume Children also have a lot of selection for their Star Wars costumes. Yoda is a popular look for small children, as are ewoks. Of course, the main characters always capture a child’s imagination and Star Wars certainly offers a wealth of characters to intrigue a child. Quite often, when a child gets a costume, he or she does not confine wearing it only during Halloween. Quite often, it becomes a play outfit for dress up and fantasy play. You definitely get your money’s worth there!

Wigs and Helmets Wigs and helmets are amazing Halloween props and they work quite well with transforming someone into princess Leia or Luke Skywalker with their distinctive hairdo or X wing helmet. Star Wars wigs and helmets help to create a more convincing Star Wars costume for adults as well as children.

“Yoda forget do not” Oh yes, wise old Yoda. Since Yoda is tiny in the move, he makes a great child star wars costume! Kids, and adults, love to try out Yoda’s distinctive speech pattern. Call me a nerd, but I love hearing two little kids having intense conversations in “Yodaese.”

The Cute Couple of R2D2 and C3PO Aww . . . how cute! Now these two could readily be a great couple’s costume! These characters work wonderfully as both child and adult star wars costumes. R2D2 and C3PO are just so loveable that come Halloween night, you’re sure to see your favorite robots running around.

The Darth Vader Costume - Arguable the BEST Costume I don’t want to start any fights here, but this is a seriously cool outfit! No one can deny that! This makes a perfect adult Star Wars costume for the drama and mystique associated with it and an attractive child star wars costume since he is the scary bad guy!

Costumes for both kids and adults are typically worn at Halloween or when going to masquerades. Many people love to dress up and Halloween gives everyone a really good excuse to put on a costume and have a ball. The cool thing about costumes, particularly Star Wars costumes, is that you can be as simple or as complex as you wish. While a Darth Vader costume may be quite involved with many pieces, an Obi Wan Kenobi costume is much simpler. It is up to you to determine how far you want to go with the complexity of your costume. Baby Halloween Costumes Too Cute to Resist Buying This Year

Saturday, May 31st, 2008
by Susan West

Halloween is a great opportunity for children to dress up as their favorite cartoon or movie character, but also look cute and adorable for their parents at the same time. Even children who are too young to enjoy trick-or-treating can still get dressed up and enjoy Halloween, especially since there is a huge selection of baby Halloween costumes that can be found at almost any department or Halloween store.

Whatever your pleasure, there are many different and sweet baby Halloween costumes. Dressing up your little one on this holiday should be no problem for you. Some of the most popular costumes for little ones include pumpkins, spiders, or even tiny witch costumes. Others include adorable impersonations of vegetables like carrots or tomatoes.

You will find that infant costumes come with either a hat or some other head adornment. For obvious reasons any type of mask should be avoided on a baby. Anyone who has spent any time with an infant knows right-off that everything goes into their mouth. If an infant Halloween costume does come with a hat, make sure it stays secure with a strap of some kind.

Kids who are a little bit older than infants have much more of a selection when it comes to Halloween costumes, since they can dress up as almost anything they can dream up. Most stores fill their racks with costumes relating to new movies that have been released that year, along with the classics such as witches and other Halloween related characters.

Little girls love costume’s with wings! Try either a fairy, angel or butterfly outfit. Or perhaps a character from one of your favorite afternoon television shows? Dora the Explorer and Bratz are easily found toddler Halloween costumes. But maybe the little girl you’re shopping for really wants to get into the spirit of Halloween. More scary choices include witches, ghosts and pirates - Argh! Of course you will want to ask for ideas before making any Halloween costume purchase.

Maybe you have a limited Halloween costume budget? Let’s face it, who wants to spend gobs on an outfit worn for a few hours? If a boy is whom you shop for, go for a basic costume spruced up with accessories. You will find no shortage of cute (well, don’t tell them that!) pieces. Goblins, sea-monsters and swamp creatures are easily created with a bit of make-up here and there. Favorite characters such as Shrek, Spiderman and Batman are easy to find and affordable to purchase Halloween costumes. If you are buying for an older boy, look for a coordinating hat or accessory, such as a plastic knife or eye-patch. Boys like dress-up just as much as girls!

Halloween costumes can be purchased at department stores, Halloween specialty stores, or even online. The most popular costumes are normally targeted to movies and television shows, but the classics and Halloween related costumes are also a favorite year after year. Halloween is a great time for toddlers, babies, and infants to dress up as their favorite characters, and it can be fun for the parents as well. You can let your children choose whatever they want for a costume this holiday season, or even pick a theme or movie that your entire family can be included in. Edited by Glinda Zuladra

A Two Year Olds Adorable Little Toddler Halloween Costume

Saturday, May 24th, 2008
by Susan West

One of the best times I’ve ever had was making Halloween costumes for my children, nieces and nephews. Finding something that was both safe, easy to put on and take off and within our limited budget wasn’t all that easy to find.

For the most part infant costumes are relatively safe. A cotton sweat pea is not just comfortable, but also lacks potentially dangerous pieces that may either cover the face or have sharp edges. If your “baby” is walking, keeping him or her relegated to the stroller is just not going to work. Find a toddler costume that allows for free movement and does not block their eyesight. As you approach that first house, chances are your little angel will hurriedly reach for the door. This is when you find out if that toddler Halloween costume will be a trick or a treat.

The ability to wear clothing under the costume is helpful when the climate is not so warm during this time of year, particularly if the costume will be worn over a jacket and additional clothing. Be certain that neither infant nor toddler Halloween costume impedes the movement of the children’s extremities; bunching or gather outfits will make it difficult to walk.

When dealing with infant and toddler Halloween costumes, whether they are bought or handmade, inspect them for safety. Every mask should be under review to make sure that it does not to hinder their vision. Face painting on the other hand is ideal. Face painting will not interfere with being able to see, while they are enjoying Halloween fun. Review any type of flowing infant and toddler Halloween costumes to make sure that it is not too long, as this will create hazards for a child as they move about. There are many fantastic new arrivals in infant and toddler costumes for Halloween. Many are available that include the use of face paints rather than a mask.

Want the safest suit possible? Opt for a suit that has few pieces and no mask. Some cute toddler costume ideas include a monkey, doggy, kitty or princess. Use face paint instead of a mask and easily attach ears or a crown with either a headband or barrettes. A shortened monkey tail will also help avoid potential tripping. TIP: make sure your little prince or princess can easily get in and out of the suit. This makes bathroom breaks as simple as possible!

Depending on the age of your little “trick or treater,” they may still be putting everything into their mouth. Avoid any dangling pieces that Jr. and Suzy will want to taste. An infant Halloween costume should obviously avoid any elaborate hood or head coverings.

Both infant and Toddler Halloween costumes have become far safer than they once were. Materials used are normally flame retardant. Be certain that yours are, as it is difficult to be constantly aware that a child adheres to safety rules with regard to the candles placed in the jack o’ lanterns. Swap candles for glow sticks to be safe.

Infant and toddler Halloween costumes are to be appealing and pleasurable rather than a safety hazard that may possibly turn an evening of fun and magic into something much less desirable. Halloween will be safe and worthwhile for both you and your child when you take the time to ensure that the Halloween costume worn by your infant or toddler is safe to wear. More over, just think of how proud you will be of the infant or toddler who will be wearing a special costume for Halloween. Edited by Glinda Zuladra

Have A Little Fun In A Gorgeous Medieval Renaissance Costume

Tuesday, February 26th, 2008
by Susan West

Remember those Renaissance fairs that the Jr. High would hold each year? The airy music and elaborate medieval costumes made for an interesting and creative atmosphere. Why not take a break from the everyday and visit a Renaissance fair as an adult? If you don’t have a Renaissance costume, don’t worry. The fair will have clothing shops that cater to people of all sizes and age. If anything, go into one of these shops just to enjoy the craftsmanship and intricacy of the beautiful garbs.

This terminology comes from Renaissance Fairs. As mundane is a term describing someone who is not in costume. However, costume is not a term used while referring to medieval and renaissance clothing it is garb. Another interesting fact is that half of the people seen at these special events do not work for the fair, rather they are common people dressed up in renaissance and medieval costume to make merry and take part in the atmosphere of that era.

There are few times in history that mirror the dynamic era of the Renaissance. Actually, none equal this explosive time in creative discovery and social change. The middle ages are ripe with great costume potential. A medieval costume ranges from a daring knight, mystical wizard, simple servant girl, and not to forget the regal King and Queen.

At that, time there was great change in economic, political and cultural areas. Everyone knows that clothing was a reflection of his or her society stations. The Renaissance Era overlaps the late middle ages while there were great changes taking place, in science as well as art. Clothing at this time was fashioned with more elegance and style. Although still signifying their station in society they were granted a bit more flair in renaissance garb.

For example, if you were to wear a wench costume or servant girl, the general attitude that goes along with those costumes medieval or renaissance is still, shall we say scandalous. If you are going more the Maid Marian look, then demure and innocent, while Robin Hood would want a fearless and brave man. Deciding to take on the role of Merlin or other wizard then evokes mystery and power and possibly darkness.

In light of this, it is no wonder that many individuals choose medieval costumes and Renaissance costumes while attending Halloween parties or Renaissance Fairs. Such clothing permit us to become apart of this important time in history. Imagine if you will being Queen for a day and if you do plan to attend a Renaissance Fair, you are strongly urged to acquire a medieval costume or renaissance costumes to get the full effect of these wonderful and imaginative events.

Word of warning ladies! Before you strap on that corset remember to take a big, deep breath. This will be your last until the corset comes of. Those Renaissance ladies were not naturally small waisted, oh no. This is how even the more plump ladies were able to achieve the coveted small waist. So make your costume comfortable. After all, the point is to have fun, right?!
