Be In The Know On What Makes Great Centurion Costumes This Year

by Johnnie Rico

The movie Centurion will be in theaters in the fall this year, giving the Roman Centurion Costumes an opportunity for more popularity than is normally the case. The characters of Roman times are both intriguing and well known, and the easily identifiable characteristics of those characters makes it enjoyable when wearing a costume.

Although there is more creativity to be had when dressing up as a Gladiator, and a sheet and laurel wreath provide the instantly recognizable countenance of a Roman Senator, the true champions of the era were the Centurions of Rome’s legendary military. Rome’s Legions built the well known Pax Romana running from Persia to Britain, and even though the government of the Roman Empire kept everything working well, it was still the Legions that gave it its power.

There are four main parts to making the costume look realistic. The first is the clothes, which includes the chest piece and knee length tunic. The immediately recognizable helmet with its feathers is crucial. Since one has to look the part from top to bottom, the distinctive Roman sandals are necessary. One cannot forget the sword and the shield. For authenticity they should be the Gladius, or Roman short sword, and a Scutum, or small round shield.

The costume can be made distinctive with further improvements like a cape, more weapons, greaves to protect the shins, and bracelets. A javelin could also be carried around, but that would probably go too far.

This makes an excellent choice as one part of a couple’s costume as well. With the man dressing as the Centurion, the woman has a choice of dressing up as one of the stylish Roman ladies or as one of the uncontrollable barbarians contesting the Romans. The movie trailer that is out now displays these choices in an exciting visual fashion.
