This Year’s Best Halloween Costumes

by Mark Walters

There are certain types of Halloween costumes that are universally popular every year. There are also certain costumes that are popular because of an event, movie, TV show, or book that was published or was in theaters between Halloween of the previous year and the Halloween coming up. Let’s start with new and interesting Halloween costumes of 2010.

The biggest trend in Halloween costumes this year seems to be anything to do with Alice in Wonderland. This year’s movie of the same name, starring Johnny Depp and Anne Hathaway, will spur sales and rentals of costumes for the Mad Hatter, Alice, Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum, the Red Queen and the Queen of Hearts, the White Rabbit and the Cheshire cat. Some great Halloween costumes this year will be inspired by Shrek Forever After. Shrek, Princess Fiona, Rapunzel, Puss N’ Boots and the Donkey will be very popular costumes for children and adults alike.

How to Train Your Dragon is another movie that’s going to inspire plenty of Halloween 2010 costumes. Dragons and Vikings will certainly be wandering the street as darkness falls. Look for Terrible Terror, Monstrous Nightmare, Night Fury, Gronckle and Hideous Zippleback. Vikings hoisting a few at your Halloween party will include Snotlout, Fishlegs, Astrid, Hiccup, Stoick and Ruffnut and Tuffnut.

The movie Robin Hood will undoubtedly inspire lots of Robin Hoods, Maid Marions, King Richards and Friar Tucks. Toy Story 3 will have lots of kids dressing up for Halloween as Buzz Lightyear, Jessie, Ken Doll, Peas -in-a-Pod and Lots-o’ Huggin’. There are sure to be many people dressed as Michael Jackson, after his unfortunate and untimely death a little more than a year ago.

There are, of course, costumes that are popular every Halloween. They don’t require much work, they’re not usually too expensive, almost anyone can assemble them, and they’re always appropriate. These would include witches, princesses, ballerinas, pirates, cowboys, fireman and policeman, superheroes and Ninjas. Most stores that carry Halloween costumes will include either entire costumes or pieces that you can put together for a costume. Or you could just raid a closet!

Halloween is on the way and you don’t want to be the last one to choose a costume. Are you looking for something creative or something more traditional? The ideas above should start you on the path to making or finding your best Halloween costume ever!
