Angel Fancy Dress Costumes

by David Jones

If your little angel is having a birthday soon, then surprise her with an angel fancy dress costume party. Girls of all ages love fancy dress and an angel fancy dress costume party is a great variation on the fairy theme, if you’re looking for something a little bit different.

A friend of mine will celebrate her 30th birthday later this month and has decided she would like to hold a fancy dress party. I suggested to her that she have a themed party and, after much discussion with mutual friends, we have decided on a “naughty and nice” theme.

Basically, the idea is that the ladies will be in angel fancy dress costume and the men will dress as devils. However, two of the guests, husband and wife Micky and Louise, have decided it will be fun to indulge in a bit of role reversal. Louise will come dressed as a devil and Micky will be wearing an angel fancy dress costume! Micky is 6ft 2in and a keen amateur rugby player, so the sight of him dressed as an angel in white satin and lace with a pair of feathery wings should be a laugh! They wondered where they could find an angel fancy dress costume large enough to fit and asked my advice, as they know I am something of an expert on this subject. I was able to give them details of specialist on-line fancy dress retailers, some of whom stock plus sizes and “gender bender” clothes. Of course, the halo and wings should provide no problem as they are standard in any angel fancy dress costume and should fit OK, possibly with a little adjustment in fit for Micky’s broad rugby player shoulders.

So, how do you go about making your little angel’s day? First, you have to think about the angel fancy dress costume. If you are handy with scissors, needle and thread, you might like to make or alter any suitable existing clothes.

You can be as creative as you like when you make a costume yourself, adding tuile, net or voile to give volume to a plain white dress or nightgown, along with silver and gold sequins and glitter for a sparkling “angel dust” effect. No self-respecting angel would be seen without a pair of wings. Draw the outline of the wings on to some cardboard (a heart shape is easiest), cut out the wings and either spray with gold or silver paint or cover with aluminium foil. Using a hole punch or scissors, make four holes in the middle of the wings, to form an imaginary square. Tie a short length of elastic from both top holes to both bottom holes. Your angel can put her arms through the elastic and wear the wings like a back pack. A tinsel covered halo made from craft wire and attached to an Alice band completes the angel fancy dress costume.

My halo is made from white fur fabric attached to a headband and the wings are fur trimmed with printed net inset panels to represent feathers. A pair of white diamond net tights and long white nylon gloves will nicely complement my angel fancy dress costume. I can’t wait to get dressed up!

Don’t forget to supply your little angels with suitably heavenly party food. Cupcakes or fairy cakes can be adapted into angel cakes. Cut a slice off the top of each cake, divide into two, place a teaspoon of butter cream into the void, and arrange a pair of “wings” on each cake. Sprinkle with edible angel dust and silver and gold dragees.

Finally, don’t forget make-up to complement your angel fancy dress costume. Glitter body paint, pearly white nail polish and sparkly false white eyelashes will create an amazing effect. If you have chosen fallen angels as your theme, then go overboard with thick black eyeliner and dramatic black nail polish. Let’s pray that you have a heavenly Hen Night in your angel fancy dress costume!
