Great Ideas For Maternity Costumes

by Julie Ingham

Maternity Costumes? Really? These are two of responses I sometimes get when talking about my costume ideas. It’s amazing how many think that it’s to difficult or even impossible to dress up when pregnant.

It’s quite the opposite. Being pregnant gives you the opportunity to be extra creative when selecting the perfect maternity costume.

A great example of a very quick and easy costume to make is the pea pod. Wear all green and make a vertical slit on your shirt or sweater. Paint the belly green and people will be able to see the pea inside the pod. It’s great idea.

Another great idea is the pregnant man. Im sure you have read about him or even seen him on Oprah and now you can make sure he will join the party. Put on a mustache, dress like a man your all set.

You can do many clever things with you belly and some paint. One cool idea is to change your belly into a fish tank. Paint a fish and perhaps some bubbles on your belly. If you want to you can just wear a tank top to show it but you can also wear a white or light blue blouse that is see through.

If you want to paint something really simple you can just paint a peace sign or a smiley on you belly and then dress like a flower child. Shirts or tees with loud prints and some wacky pants should to the job. Especially if you add some wild hair and flowers to the mix.

Watermelon Farmer. Paint your belly like a watermelon. Green with light green stripes. Then just dress like a typical farmer would.

Catholic school girl and the priest. Short skirt and knee socks do the trick. Then dress your husband like a priest and you will have a very noughty duo.

Proud of your figure? Proud enough to wear a bikini to the party? It’s a great idea and you can turn you belly into a beach ball using some paint. It’s will be so cool to see someone carrying a beach ball at the party.

There is of course the option of not creating a costume but rather buy one. You can find many great maternity costumes online as well as accessories. It’s not that expensive either, you can have a great outfit for only $30-40. It will save you a lot of work which can be a smart choice if you are close to labor.
