Halloween Safety: Stranger Danger

by Occiane Lambert

When our children dress up and have fun trick or treat this Halloween, they will also be encountering many strangers. It is critical that our children know how to deal or talk with strangers in any situation.

Even if our children have been taught at home or in school about dealing with strangers, please re-emphasize the rules. If they need to be told at least five times to take out the garbage, then they need to be told that many times to remember stranger safety.

The number one rule to teach children is that adults should not be asking them for personal information. Never share where you live, where you go to school, your name or any other information about yourself with a stranger. Even when trick-or-treating.

Teach them to avoid talking to strangers who pull up next to them in a car. Its okay for children to flat out ignore them. If an adult needs help or direction, they can speak to children at a distance. Children should stay out of reach from any stranger.

If a child sees a stranger who looks slightly suspicious, walk around them. Cross the street if you can and do not talk to them.

It is safer to be with a group of people. When trick-or-treating, children and teens will be better off in a crowd of people they know. The best is to be with a parent, when possible.

Never enter homes that you are trick or treating at. If strangers invite them in, even if it seems like a good reason, they should know to leave immediately. Explain to your children that in all reality, there is never a good reason why they should walk into a strangers home.
