How to Quickly and Easily Construct a Homemade Halloween Costume

by Brian Lehr

Let’s face it, with the economy going the way it is, more and more families are searching for ways to save a few dollars here and there. And now, with the fall season upon us, we are approaching three main festivals that require the spending of money - halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. Wouldn’t it be great if we could get a few ideas to help us save some money during these times, instead of spending more?

Well, I’ve got great news for you! Why not take some time to make your own homemade Halloween costume? This will not only save you some money, but it can be a great family activity for you and your children. And in this day and age, we could always use a little more quality family time.

Most of us aren’t very creative, so here a couple of ideas to get you started in making your own homemade Halloween costume.

Look in your closet to see what you can find. Dresses that you used in your prom or as a bridesmaid can easily turn a little girl into a princess, bride, or beauty pageant queen. Got any old suits that dad hasn’t worn in awhile? Why not dress your son up as a Businessman or a nerdy computer geek? In fact, I’m sure if you kept digging through all those clothes, you’d soon find the perfect costume for a rock star or hippie!

Do you have any old headbands lying around? How about a hot glue gun? Here’s a quick way to add a fun accessory to any costume. Gather up some pieces of fabric, cut them into the shapes of animal ears, and glue them to the headband. Now you’ve a set of ears for your child. Or glue some leaves and small twigs — now you’ve got the beginnings of a GI Joe or GI Jane.

Do have a white sweatsuit lying around (that you don’t mind ruining for a good cause)? Use it to turn your child into a cow or Dalmatian. All you have to do is use a black marker and draw spots all over the sweatsuit. Don’t forget to put a big black spot on your kid’s nose! In fact, you could even complete the costume by using a headband with some animal’s ears glued to them.

How about going to your local furniture store and asking for a large box? Cut a hole on two opposite sides of the box for your child’s arms, and a hole in the top of the box for his head. Draw a TV screen on the front of the box, and glue a few buttons on there for the TV controls, and you’ve got a great little TV going out trick or treating. For an added touch, add two plastic straws to a headband, and now he has a TV antennae!

Or how about this? Draw a screen on the front of a cardboard box, and then glue a computer mouse (or even a furry mouse as a joke) to the side of the box. Or my favorite — a washing machine. Make an opening on top of the box (in front of the child’s head), or on the front of the box. Inside this opening you can glue a smaller box or bag, and this can be where everyone places the child’s candy when he goes trick or treating.

Homemade Halloween costumes are fun, exciting and don’t cost a lot of money like buying your own. With a little imagination and supplies around the home, your son or daughter will have a costume to be proud of.
