Safety Should Be First When Installing Halloween Props

by Marlene Zubber

There are hundreds of Halloween props that you can use to creatively decorate your yard or porch, haunted houses and Halloween parties. These Halloween props can range from string lights in the form of bats to tombstones, body parts, hanging ghosts, fog machines, and even animatronic figures that will move and groan and add a frightening sense of reality to whatever scene you create for this favorite holiday.

When decorating for Halloween parties, this year, you should be aware of safety issues to make sure your Halloween props and decorations are not hazardous to your guests. Halloween is a holiday enjoyed by children and adults alike, but there are always a few accidents every year that could have been easily avoided if people had just taken a moment to consider how best to use their Halloween props. Among them, and the most common, are cords and cobwebs.

So many Halloween props today use some form of electrcity to add atmospheric lighting, movements, and ghastly groans and wailing. Of course, if electricy is need for power, a cord is going be necessary.

When setting up for your Halloween party and arranging your Halloween decorations, it’s vital to pay attention to where you are putting the cord. It is important to not just leave a cord dangling, or lying in the sidewalk or hallway where people walking past could trip on it, damaging themselves and your Halloween props. And never leave a cord near liquid of any kind.

Some people hide their cords beneath sand, fallen leaves, mulch or moss. While this can be attractive and keep the cord from showing, it is also a safety hazard. A hidden cord maybe still be tripped over simply because no one was able to see it.

Fake spider webs, gauzy lace, or other hanging decorations should not be placed where people can walk into them or become tangled in them. Halloween costumes are not like regular clothes, and many may have strange projections and be larger than the person wearing them, so be aware of the fact that many of these decorative webs may be caught on clothing, masks, or even the animatronic Halloween decorations.

These are not the only Halloween decorations that can be dangerous. Many people use candles as part of their Halloween props. This year, instead of real flame, try battery operated LEDs in your candles or votives. They look just as good, and cannot hurt anyone.

If you follow these safety tips with your Halloween props and decorations this year, you should have plenty of fun and no accidents, this year. Happy Halloween!
